song, the bad plus, oi
i first heard this band at the Cape Town Jazz Festival earlier this year. i had no idea who they were, but from the get go i was sold. they were playing their rendition of nirvana's "smells like teen spirit" and they gave it a decidedly mellow tinge, with a bit of a rebellious kick nonetheless, true to the original.
but it was when they performed the song "people like you" that they truly began speaking to me. it's slow, jazzy and sounds like the motif for that film you once saw about the girl leaving the guy behind, heart in hand, hope in hell. it's a beautiful song. it reminds me of everyone, ever get that feeling?

beach house - teen dreams
cults, go outside

we found this band, wyling away on the free wifi at local cafe Wolves.
pitchfork describes them as ungoogable, the sparse info found on the duo is that, well they're a boy-girl duo from NYC, and are film students. no album yet, but bleeding out singles on the web intermittently

random aimlessness
i spent the day decked out in a suit, hopping from mall to mall in the northern suburbs

it was hot, crazy hot and i had a suit on,

navy pin stripe suit with a sky blue shirt
my "asking-for-money" getup.
so i landed at three different exclusive books, picked up a self help book about winning ways
and then put it down,
i picked up the latest mandela book, "letters to myself", and found myself engrossed.

the man is who they say he is, even in most quietest of moments.
bought a schwarma and ate it sitting on a bench next to man wearing a zcc badge.
we said hello, sat for 20 min, and then said goodbye with nothing else said in between

of love of airports
i love the airport, and not for a love of travel. the airport is like sex, it serves to heighten whatever emotions one may already have, brings things into focus. so if you love someone and you two consummate that love, whatever love there is is magnified by sex. if you two suffer a chasm and you have sex, that chasm is heightened.
so the airport is similar in some sense, in that it's so full of unambiguous emotion, people tend to forget themselves in their "goodbyes" and their "hellos".
anyway. the above video is a song by dan auerbach, a song i love. love in that crazy way people love things that make them feel melancholy, if not sad. beyond that, beyond it all, i really do Just love the song

the delfonics
this is probably the most sampled group in the nineties. the delfonics were the real OGs, everything from the fugees "ready or not" to silks, "for the love i gave to you" to "summertime" by jazzy jeff and the fresh prince.
their songs have been used extensively in film soundtracks, the most notable being Quentin Tarantino's 1997 movie Jackie Brown, in which "La-La (Means I Love You)" and "Didn't I Blow Your Mind" underscore the pivotal relationship between Pam Grier and Robert Forster. the film helped create a borderline cult following for the songs and this group.

Tselane
i love the magic in this song, so simple so magic in its sense (overwhelmingly defined and beautiful sense) of nostalgia, cuts deep revealing memories i never knew i had... and it is one long serenade to youth and hopefulness and... the kind of melancholy that makes everything beautiful and sometimes sad, sad-because-it's-beautiful kind of beauty.

don't touch me on my studio
wow, the circus seems to be in full swing.
scene: awb duud - in 2010? enuff said, nasal accented black woman rocking a dashiki-looking over-sized 80's faux tiger print top (who uses her hands to emphasise her multi-syllable words), and a journalist with an s-curl in 2010? enuff said. (post scripto: he went to catholic school st john bosco - go figure).
look, laugh, weep, sigh, deep sigh. i think we are currently all being disturbingly touched on our studios

twice
in so many ways, this song, this memory belongs to my friend, Her. and i didnt even know it that she was attached in both time and place to this song. infused, oness with the sadness of this song. straight out of a made-for-tv-romcom that defies the happy ending mantra and spells out its message in melancholy. we overwrite, as we tend to do, but this is huger than huge. and i trust that this goodbye cancels out all that obvious sadness one shares with ones past. if you knew her and that place when, then you'd understand. please enjoy this song and its untainted sadness

Legend
this ad, if only our president would attempt to feign to building some sort sort of legacy, sigh
he was no ordinary man, he devoured life,
swallowing large chunks of it whole - refusing to chew
no ordinary man, he lived enough life for ten people
fame stuck to him like glue,
part myth, part legend, part of us all,
and in the year 1955 - he was 24 years old

it was here, then it left

the first ten years of my life where i had my eyes firmly and roundly opened for each waking moment. the decade in which alles happended and nothing happened is gwon, nothing to deep, nothing profound profound to say about....
anyway, it's been too long, happy new brethren, and sorry for the delay, been on an unintended hiatus for the last couple of months. waiting waiting for the grand epiphany to come out come out where ever it is....
did we wish you all the happiest of new years? well happy new year, one and all, newness once more, newness can be a good thing.
