as far as emo goes, grizzly bear often does it best. and this song, for that overly-wrought teeny angst mainstream tour de force; twilight, is an amazing ode to all things melancholique. better than best, the song features beach house, which we feature else where on these pages.
i first heard this band at the Cape Town Jazz Festival earlier this year. i had no idea who they were, but from the get go i was sold. they were playing their rendition of nirvana's "smells like teen spirit" and they gave it a decidedly mellow tinge, with a bit of a rebellious kick nonetheless, true to the original.
but it was when they performed the song "people like you" that they truly began speaking to me. it's slow, jazzy and sounds like the motif for that film you once saw about the girl leaving the guy behind, heart in hand, hope in hell. it's a beautiful song. it reminds me of everyone, ever get that feeling?
beach house are back with a new album, "teen dream", a follow up form their 2006 album. the song "take care" is a nostalgia tinged throw-back to early fleetwood mac, coupled with the clangy, if not dreamy sounds of the memory-tapes ensambles.
we found this band, wyling away on the free wifi at local cafe Wolves.
pitchfork describes them as ungoogable, the sparse info found on the duo is that, well they're a boy-girl duo from NYC, and are film students. no album yet, but bleeding out singles on the web intermittently
